If your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) application has been denied in Florida, you have the right to request a reconsideration. This is the first step in the SSI appeals process and gives you another opportunity to have your claim reviewed and potentially approved.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. What Is SSI Reconsideration?

Reconsideration is a complete review of your claim by someone who did not take part in the original decision. During reconsideration:

  • The SSA reviews all the evidence from your initial application
  • You can submit new medical records or additional information to strengthen your case
  • The decision is made based on the updated file without a hearing at this stage

2. When Should You File for Reconsideration?
  • You must file your reconsideration within 60 days of receiving your denial notice
  • Submit the request as soon as possible to avoid missing deadlines and having to restart your application

3. How to Request Reconsideration

You can request reconsideration by:

  • Filing online:
  • Visit www.ssa.gov/benefits/disability/appeal.html
  • Follow instructions to complete and submit your reconsideration request
  • Calling SSA:
  • Call 1-800-772-1213 to request the necessary forms by mail
  • Visiting your local SSA office:
  • Submit your reconsideration paperwork in person

When filing, include any new medical evidence, treatment updates, or additional details supporting your inability to work.

4. What Happens After You File?

Once your reconsideration request is filed:

  • A disability examiner who was not involved in your initial denial will review your case
  • They will consider all previous and new evidence submitted
  • You may be contacted for additional information or clarification

5. How Long Does Reconsideration Take in Florida?

On average, reconsideration decisions take 3 to 5 months in Florida, depending on:

  • SSA workload
  • Speed of gathering updated medical records
  • Complexity of your medical condition

6. What If Reconsideration Is Denied?

If your reconsideration is denied, you can proceed to the next appeal level:

  • Requesting a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)
  • This gives you the opportunity to present your case in person, provide testimony, and submit further evidence

7. Tips for a Strong Reconsideration
  • Submit all updated medical records and treatment notes
  • Obtain detailed statements from your doctors explaining how your condition limits your ability to work
  • Review your initial application to identify any missing or unclear information and address it in your reconsideration request
