If you’re unable to work due to a serious medical condition, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Applying for SSDI in Florida involves several steps and careful preparation. Understanding the process can help you avoid delays and increase your chances of approval.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

Before applying, make sure you meet the basic requirements for SSDI:

  • You have a medical condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
  • You have worked and paid Social Security taxes, earning enough work credits (usually 20 credits in the last 10 years for most adults).

Step 2: Gather Required Documentation

You’ll need several documents to complete your application:

  • Social Security number and birth certificate
  • Medical records, including diagnoses, treatments, medications, and doctors’ contact information
  • A detailed work history for the last 15 years
  • Information about your education and job training
  • W-2 forms or self-employment tax returns

Having complete and organized records will help avoid processing delays.

Step 3: Submit Your SSDI Application

You can apply for SSDI benefits in Florida using any of the following methods:

Online

  • Visit www.ssa.gov and click “Apply for Disability.”

By Phone

  • Call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.

In Person

  • Visit your local Social Security office. It's a good idea to call ahead and schedule an appointment.

Step 4: Cooperate with the Review Process

After submitting your application, it will be reviewed by Disability Determination Services (DDS) in Florida. During this stage, you may be:

  • Asked to attend a consultative medical exam
  • Contacted for additional documentation
  • Asked to clarify work or medical history

Be sure to respond promptly to all requests to keep your application moving.

Step 5: Wait for a Decision

It usually takes 3 to 5 months to receive an initial decision. If your application is approved, the SSA will notify you of your benefit amount and when payments will begin.

If your application is denied, don’t give up — you have the right to appeal.
