To qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in Florida, you must meet strict medical and non-medical criteria set by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Understanding these qualifications can help you prepare a strong application.
Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.
Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.
Medical Qualifications for Disability
You must prove that you have a severe medical condition that:
- Prevents you from working
- Has lasted, or is expected to last, at least 12 months or result in death
The SSA uses a Listing of Impairments, also known as the “Blue Book,” which outlines conditions that may automatically qualify you for benefits if specific criteria are met. Common qualifying conditions include:
- Mental disorders such as depression, PTSD, or schizophrenia
- Musculoskeletal issues like back injuries or arthritis
- Neurological disorders such as epilepsy or multiple sclerosis
- Cardiovascular problems including heart disease
- Cancer
- Autoimmune diseases like lupus
Even if your condition isn’t listed, you can still qualify if it significantly limits your ability to perform basic work activities.
Work History Requirements for SSDI
To qualify for SSDI, you must have earned enough work credits by paying into Social Security through your job. In general:
- You need 40 work credits, 20 of which must have been earned in the last 10 years.
- Younger applicants may qualify with fewer credits.
Financial Requirements for SSI
If you don’t have enough work history for SSDI, you may still qualify for SSI, which is based on financial need. To be eligible:
- Your income must fall below the SSA’s set limits.
- Your resources (like bank accounts, property, etc.) must not exceed $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for couples.
Functional Limitations Are Key
SSA evaluates whether your condition limits your ability to:
- Sit, stand, walk, lift, or carry items
- Focus, remember, or interact with others
- Perform tasks consistently without interruptions
If your impairments prevent you from working any job on a full-time basis, you may qualify.
